When dual street lights are mounted on a single lighting column, they are usually supported by two outreach brackets.

And that’s where something interesting appears.

Together, they form a shape—either a T or a Y.

In practice, we probably see far more Y shapes than T shapes.

A perfectly horizontal arrangement is relatively uncommon, while a slight upward angle of the outreach arms is much more typical, naturally creating the familiar Y profile.

Perhaps most people never notice it.

But as public lighting practitioners, we can’t help looking up.

Seeing those repeating Ts and Ys standing in the middle of the road somehow makes the whole streetscape feel orderly, balanced, and enjoyable.
